The administrator Ivan Varenukha is attacked by a vampire, and the financial director Grigory Rimsky narrowly escapes a similar fate, fleeing Moscow.

The Strange Messages The Telegrams from Yalta Rimsky and Varenukha receive telegrams supposedly from Likhodeev in Yalta, asking for money and confirmation. They are confused, as Likhodeev was just seen in Moscow. The Phone Call Varenukha calls Likhodeev's apartment and speaks to a man who claims to be Koroviev. He is told that Likhodeev has gone for a drive. Rimsky is suspicious. The Order to Deliver Rimsky orders Varenukha to take the telegrams to the police. But as Varenukha leaves, he hears a warning from a mysterious voice on the phone, telling him not to take them anywhere.

The Surprise Assault The Trap As Varenukha walks through the garden, he is stopped by two men. One is fat with a cat-like face, the other is short with a fang. They beat him and take his briefcase. The Drag to the Apartment They drag Varenukha to apartment 50, where a naked red-haired girl appears. She kisses him with icy lips, and Varenukha faints. He becomes a vampire. The Transformation Varenukha is now under the control of Woland's retinue. He returns to the theatre as a vampire, lying to Rimsky about Likhodeev's whereabouts.
Rimsky's DiscoveryRimsky's Discovery
The Revelation The Suspicious Tale Varenukha returns to Rimsky's office and tells a fabricated story about Likhodeev's drunken escapades in Pushkino. Rimsky, however, notices that Varenukha casts no shadow and has a strange pallor. The Window Rimsky looks out the window and sees a naked girl trying to enter. He realizes that Varenukha is a vampire and that the girl is also a demon. He is terrified. The Flight Rimsky tries to escape, but the door is locked. The girl enters through the window. Just as she is about to attack, a cock crow is heard, and the vampires flee. Rimsky escapes, catches a train to Leningrad, and disappears.
